Auto Car : Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI 140 SE

Volkswagen set the tone for the new Passat at a group preview event, which took place on the night before the Paris motor show opened last October. Through varying degrees of pizzazz involving flames, exploding crates and mock pit garages emerged Lamborghinis, Skodas, Bentleys and Audis.

Then, accompanied by nothing more than a puff of dry ice, out pootled the 'new' Passat. "Look," they said. "Waft your foot beneath the bootlid and it automatically opens." Woo.

The implication was pretty clear. This is a new Passat, rather than a new car; no shocks, no surprises. It'll do the same as it ever has: be a faithful companion to those people (and there are more than 15 million to date) who like the fuss-free way the Passat accompanies their life.

Volkswagen calls this Passat the seventh-generation car, but really it's a reskin (every panel save the roof is changed) and rework of the sixth-generation 2005 Passat. There are a few manufacturers who figure that modern platforms are so advanced now that, significant material changes aside (and they’ll eventually come, to reduce weight), honing will do.

Every major component has been tweaked on the Passat, though. Most significantly, suspension components are lighter and refinement is said to be improved.

What's it like?
Our test Passat, a 138bhp diesel, was pretty representative of a UK fleet car. We're pretty familiar with Volkswagen's 2.0-litre turbodiesel, but there are new engine mounts and the promise of smoother and quieter performance.

That's true enough, too. The Passat idles quietly and its drivetrain engages and operates with slickness and efficiency. The shift is light and positive, the controls deftly and progressively weighted.

It also rides. Whatever changes have been worked to the suspension have left the Passat supple yet well controlled, and with a surprisingly good level of crash-free bump absorption, so you hear but don't feel most imperfections.

Whatever you think of the Phaeton luxury car, it's pretty clear to me that the lessons haven’t been wasted. The Passat feels like a mature, sophisticated car, with a high-quality feel to the interior.

Both saloon and estate go on sale this month, and both are more or less the same size as before. In estate form, as tested, that means a sizeable 603-litre boot with the rear seats in place. They can be unlatched by switches just inside the tailgate, then dropped by nudging them forward with your long luggage. Handy.

What the Passat isn't, though, is particularly engaging. Your perch is wide, flat and firmly comfortable, the environment ergonomically sound and exceptionally quiet. There's a clock within easy read. All admirable qualities in a bedroom, but the enthusiast will be left wanting more from a car. The chassis proves capable at stopping, going and turning, but there's no reward to be gained by doing any of them.

Should I buy one?
Volkswagen has the ability and resources to make a car entertaining if it chooses to, so it's clear that it doesn't expect or want those qualities of the Passat. For those whose interest in driving extends no further than it being a requirement of their job or family life, the Passat will prove close to class leading. If it were the equivalent of a fridge or a lawn mower, we'd have no hesitation in recommending one.

The enthusiast, though, will also want something else in the garage to be satisfied.

The 2011 Volkswagen EOS facelift


VW has releases the first images and official details for the 2011 Volkswagen Eos facelift which will have its world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show at the beginning of next month. Sales in Europe will begin in mid January 2011.

The 2011 Volkswagen Eos facelift comes with BlueMotion technology and a newly developed Start/Stop system that work together to reduce the vehicles fuel consumption and CO2 emissions level. For example, the 2011 Volkswagen Eos 2.0 TDI, that outputs 103 kW / 140 PS, offers now a 4.8 l/100 km fuel consumption, which is 0.7 l/100 km lower than the previous version.

On the styling front, the convertible features redesigned bumpers, modified headlights, a revised grille, and LED taillights. Inside, the cabin boasts a new multi-function display and optional 'Cool' leather seats which reflect sunlight and heat. Tech goodies include Light Assist (which automatically switches between high- and low beams), Park Assist, and Keyless Access.

The 2011 Eos has received multiple equipment additions, such as a multi-function color Premium display, Lights Assist, the second generation of the Park Assist, Keyless Access.
The vehicle’s engine range includes one diesel unit and three petrol units. The diesel is a 140 hp unit that can be mated to a six-speed manual or to a six-speed DSG automatic. The entry-level petrol unit is a 122 hp 1.4 TSI, which is followed by a 160 hp incarnation of the same engine and by a 210 hp 2.0 TSI engine (this is borrowed from the Golf GTI). All the petrol units come with a six-speed manual transmission, while the range-topper can be ordered with a six-speed DSG gearbox.

The interior has been revised to play up the center stack of controls. New materials are said to give the Eos a higher sense of quality. A new steering wheel has been specified, too.

Pricing for the 2011 Volkswagen Eos remains unchanged from the just-superseded version; $46,990 for the Eos 103TDI and $48,990 for the Eos 155TSI, excluding on-road costs.

The Volkswagen Golf R


Tuner Wimmer RS release photos and details for Volkswagen Golf R. called Red Devil.

The Golf R delivers 270 HP at 6,000 RPM and makes the 0-60mph sprint in 5.7 seconds. Not exactly a car we’d classify as a highlight on a any of our pages, but impressive enough for a Golf. Of course, not everyone thought so. Instead, Wimmer Tuning looked at the Golf R and said, "we can do better." After that, the „RED DEVIL V-Projekt“, an impressive tuning package for the Golf R, was born and brought with it an amazing 478 HP.

The power upgrade results from the optimized engine electronics, plus the Wimmer RS VW Golf 6 R received a tuned turbocharger, custom injection nozzles, connection rods, cylinder heads, an improved aftercooler and an additional oil pump.

The Wimmer Volkswagen Golf R develops no less than 478 hp and 610 Nm of torque, which are all coming out of a 2.0 TFSI engine. That's 200 hp more than standard! This gives the Wimmer Volkswagen Golf R a power to weight ratio of 3,04 kg/hp. We're not sure which is the actual top speed of the Wimmer Volkswagen Golf R, since the car is ellectronically limited to 291 km/h. The 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of the Wimmer Volkswagen Golf R has not been announced yet.

RED DEVIL V - Wimmer RS gives you wings with Golf 6 R - 478 hp and 610 Nm

When a street car is presented by Wimmer RS, one of the most important players on the tuning arena, everything must be perfect – while Germany is slowly preparing for winter, the tyres are still squeaking on the „RED DEVIL V-Projekt“. Standing by a power-circulating gear testing machine show the profs from Solingen, what the car is capable of: Thorsten Wimmer and his crew make the model Golf 6 R race, on the high-speed line and autobahn. The RED DEVIL V is not only fast, but also runs stable.

The Solingen tuning specialist Wimmer RS gives you wings with the new Golf 6 R 2.0 TFSI. And an extensive engine tuning program: Wimmer RS increases the efficiency stage V, now Golf R has about 478 hp, instead of the common for this series 270 hp. And the torque increases up to sensational 610 Nm (range 350 Nm) and the car is stopped by 291 km/h due to electronic system. That means a power/weight ratio of 3,04 kg/hp.

Among various aspects of the provided by the company engine tuning the following could be mentioned: engine electronics tuning, tuning of turbocharger incl. pipe, changes of injection nozzles, the TFSI tuning, tuning of the connecting rods, changes of lamp coating, cylinder head, large aftercooler, additional fuel oil heater, changes in the air intake system, air intake pipe, tuning of th crank shaf, or another oil pump, of the second low pressure fuel pump und sport camshafts, so as an completely handmade high-grade steel sports exhaust system with 84 mm in diameter, a 100 - cells sports catalyst converter and a race sport coupling.

For a better road stability Wimmer RS proposes a coil spring set and helical spring set, which can from the one side lower the car and adds a sports note to the car.

As option Wimmer RS offers modifying of a high performance brake system, which bites cruel on the front and rear axle. This also provides distinctly improved delay rates and so as the increased efficiency stage V, and also suits perfectly to an „usual“ street traffic.
